IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
IKO driveway and paver systems in Pasadena typically run $3,500 to $18,000 installed, depending on whether you’re replacing a few failed pavers or rebuilding the full driveway. We stock IKO-compatible pavers and edge restraints, and can usually match your existing pattern within one visit. Most Pasadena homeowners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot near the driveway apron, or a low spot collects water after the first real rain of the season and doesn’t drain for two days.
We’re an independent Pasadena contractor, not affiliated with IKO, but we work with their paver lines often enough to know exactly what’s on the truck and what needs a special order. Before you start pulling pavers up yourself, give us a call at (626) 714-2992. The written price comes before the first paver moves, and the photo of the clean-up comes before the crew leaves.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s paver lineup for residential driveways falls into three general categories: interlocking concrete pavers (their most common California offering), permeable pavers, and slab-style pavers used more for patios than full driveways. The interlocking series is what we see most in Pasadena driveways, and it’s what most parts questions come down to.
The gotcha with IKO pavers is edge restraint compatibility. IKO’s interlocking pavers have a slightly different lip profile than the big-box store equivalents, so a generic plastic edge restraint from a home center often sits proud of the paver edge by an eighth of an inch. It looks fine for six months, then catches a wheelbarrow wheel or a kid’s bike tire and cracks. We stock the correct profile in the truck so we’re not ordering it twice.
If you’re not sure which series you have, check the underside of a loose paver. IKO stamps a mold code on most of their California-sold units. If yours is faded, take a photo of the paver face and the underside and text it to us at (626) 714-2992. Graham Stein has matched enough of these from photos to know what he’s looking at in about thirty seconds.
One more thing: IKO’s California paver mix includes a higher sand-to-cement ratio than their East Coast lines, which helps with our dry heat but means freeze-thaw isn’t the issue here. What is the issue in Pasadena is clay soil movement, and that’s a base problem, not a paver problem. More on that below.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- A paver rocks when you step on it near the garage approach. This is almost always a bedding sand washout, not a broken paver. Water finds the seam, works its way under, and the sand migrates. The paver itself is usually fine.
- Water pools in the same low spot after every rain. Pasadena’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and over time it pushes the base unevenly. The pavers didn’t fail, the sub-base did. Re-leveling means pulling the section, fixing the base, and re-compacting.
- Edge pavers drift outward along the driveway border. The edge restraint has loosened or cracked. In Pasadena’s dry summers, the ground shrinks away from the restraint and the pavers start traveling. This is the most common IKO-specific failure we see in Bungalow Heaven and the Arroyo neighborhoods.
- Fine sand washes out between pavers after every watering or rain. The polymeric sand in the joints has broken down. Polymeric sand has a lifespan in Pasadena’s UV, usually 3 to 6 years depending on sun exposure. Once it’s gone, the pavers have nothing locking them laterally.
- You hear a faint crunch when you drive over a section. That’s loose pavers grinding against each other at the joints. It means the interlock is failing and it’s time to reset and re-sand before you get chipped edges or a cracked paver.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what IKO paver work actually costs in Pasadena, using the pricing we give every homeowner:
| Scope | Pasadena Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full paver driveway installation | $7,000 – $18,000 |
| Driveway replacement (tear-out and reinstall) | $5,000 – $14,000 |
| Paver patio installation | $3,500 – $11,000 |
| Concrete driveway installation | $4,500 – $12,000 |
| Asphalt driveway paving | $3,500 – $9,000 |
| Driveway sealing | $250 – $700 |
The range depends on whether we’re salvaging existing pavers or starting fresh, how much base prep the Pasadena clay requires, and the square footage. Every job includes the written line-item price before work starts, drop cloths and shoe covers inside if we’re walking through the house, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every paver reset we do. If a paver shifts or the sand washes out within a year, we come back and make it right.
The price you see on paper is the price you pay at the end – no footnotes.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s what you can safely do yourself: lift a rocking paver and check for cracked edges, hose down the driveway and watch where water sits, and mark the low spots with chalk before your first call with us. That walkthrough information actually helps us price the job faster and more accurately.
Here’s where DIY goes wrong with IKO pavers: pulling up more than one or two pavers without re-compacting the base, buying the wrong edge restraint profile, and using mortar instead of polymeric sand in the joints. Once mortar goes into paver joints in Pasadena’s clay soil, the whole section becomes rigid and cracks at the seams, and now you’re paying for removal on top of the original repair. That’s an expensive lesson we’ve cleaned up more than once.
If it’s more than two pavers, or the low spot is bigger than a pizza box, call us at (626) 714-2992. The estimate is free, the price is written, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a half-day reset or a base rebuild.
FAQs

How long do IKO pavers last in Pasadena? The pavers themselves can last 25 to 40 years, but the sand joints and base layer in Pasadena’s clay soil typically need attention every 5 to 10 years. The paver isn’t usually the thing that fails; it’s what’s under it. Call (626) 714-2992 and we’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with.
Can you repair a section instead of replacing the whole driveway? Yes, in most cases we reset the affected section, re-compact the base, and re-sand the joints without touching the rest of the driveway. The match won’t be invisible if your pavers are heavily sun-faded, but it’s usually close. We’ll show you the color difference before we start.
How long does a paver reset take? A typical section repair runs one to two days, and a full driveway replacement in Pasadena usually runs three to five days depending on base condition and access. We’ll put the timeline in writing with the price.
Do you stock IKO pavers or do you have to order them? We stock IKO-compatible edge restraints, polymeric sand, and replacement pavers for the most common Pasadena patterns on the truck. If we need a specific color or series match, we order it and it’s usually here within a week. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone materials on broader remodeling projects, but for driveway work it’s IKO we know best.
