Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
A full kitchen remodel for a Boxabl home in Pasadena typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on whether you’re refreshing surfaces or reconfiguring the entire space. We stock Boxabl-compatible cabinets, countertops, and fixtures on the truck for most model years, and we can usually start within a week of your written estimate. Most Boxabl owners call us after they’ve lived with the stock kitchen for a year or two and realize the compact layout fights them every morning: the cabinet doors swing the wrong way, the laminate countertop has started to delaminate at the seam, or the sink basin simply isn’t deep enough for a normal pot.
Elmstead Remodeling Pasadena is an independent remodeling contractor. We are not affiliated with Boxabl, but we’ve worked on enough of their units across Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley to know exactly how they’re framed, where the utility runs live, and what fits without voiding your home’s warranty.
Which Boxabl Models This Applies To

We’ve remodeled kitchens in Boxabl Casitas from Gen 1 through current production, and the compatibility question almost always comes down to wall framing depth and the location of the mechanical wall. Boxabl homes use a folding steel frame with a compact mechanical core, which means the kitchen wall cavities are shallower than a typical Pasadena stick-built home. That’s the single biggest gotcha: standard-depth cabinets from a big-box store will not fit without modification. We order cabinet boxes spec’d for shallow-depth installation, and we’ve built a working relationship with KraftMaid, Wellborn, and Cambria so the factory knows the Boxabl parameters before the first panel gets cut.
When you call, we’ll ask you to check the label inside a cabinet door or under the sink. The unit serial number tells us the production year, and that tells us which generation of Boxabl you have and which material list applies. For countertops, Boxabl units shipped with either a thin laminate or a solid-surface composite, and neither tolerates aggressive cutting or heat the way a Cambria or Silestone quartz slab will. The decision between OEM-spec and aftermarket comes down to what you’re trying to fix. If the cabinet boxes and hinges are fine and you only dislike the doors, we can re-face rather than replace. If the countertop is the problem, upgrading to a Cambria or Silestone slab is a one-day swap in most units after templating.

Signs Your Boxabl Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Cabinet doors drift and won’t stay closed. The compact hinges Boxabl uses don’t have much adjustment range, and once they wear, they sag. What looks like a structural problem is usually a $12 hinge swap, but in a kitchen this small, one sagging door means the adjacent drawer won’t open fully.
- Countertop seam is lifting or catching crumbs. The factory laminate seam sits right over the dishwasher in many units, and repeated heat-moisture cycles there are what separate it. We’ve seen this in Boxabl kitchens all over Pasadena, particularly in older units where the seam never got a proper heat seal.
- Sink basin flexes when you fill a pot. The stock sink is a thin-gauge stainless drop-in. It works until it doesn’t. If you can see deflection around the rim, the mounting clips have pulled and water is seeping under the lip.
- Drawer slides bind or fall out of the track. The stock slides are lightweight and intolerant of overloaded drawers. Once a ball bearing drops, the metal grinds and the drawer won’t close square.
- Laminate is bubbling near the faucet or dishwasher. That’s moisture intrusion, and in Southern California’s dry air it’s easy to miss until the substrate swells. By the time you can see the bubble, the particleboard underneath has already begun to soften.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Boxabl kitchen remodel in Pasadena runs $14,000 – $45,000. That range sounds wide because the scope varies so much from unit to unit. A surface refresh with new cabinet doors, new countertop, new sink, and a backsplash falls in the $9,000 – $20,000 range. A full reconfiguration with new cabinet boxes, a Cambria or Silestone countertop, new Kohler or Moen fixtures, and lighting lands between $30,000 and $45,000. Cabinet installation alone runs $4,000 – $13,000; countertops are $2,000 – $6,500; backsplash is $800 – $2,500; and a kitchen island, if you have floor space for one, is $3,000 – $10,000.
Every estimate includes the parts, the labor, the disposal of the old material, and the clean-up. Before we start, we hand you a written, line-item price and a written scope of work. The price you see on paper is the price you pay at the end – no footnotes. And every Boxabl kitchen we complete carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something we installed isn’t right within a year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things an owner can reasonably check. If a drawer slide is binding, you can pull the drawer and look for a dropped ball bearing. If a cabinet door is sagging, a quarter-turn on the hinge screw might fix it. If the countertop seam is lifting, you can stop using it as a cutting surface and keep water away from it until someone looks at it.
But there is one thing we will be honest about: Boxabl kitchen walls are not drywall over wood studs. The steel frame and foam-core panels are engineered to be light and rigid, not to be probed with a stud finder. Cutting into the wrong spot means cutting into a utility chase or a structural fold point. We have the factory layout drawings for most units, and even then, we measure twice before the first cut. If you’ve got a cabinet that’s failed or a countertop that’s coming apart, call (626) 714-2992. We’ll come look, tell you what actually needs to happen, and put the price in writing before anything moves.
FAQs

A properly installed kitchen remodel on a Boxabl home in Pasadena should last 15 – 25 years for cabinets and 20+ years for a Cambria or Silestone quartz countertop, thanks in part to Southern California’s low humidity and mild temperature swings. The factory laminate tops and compact hinges are the first things to go, often within five to seven years. Call (626) 714-2992 if you’re planning a refresh and want to know what’s realistic for your unit’s age.
Yes, in many cases a failed cabinet hinge, a single drawer slide, or a delaminating countertop seam can be repaired without a full remodel. The deciding factor is whether the substrate and adjacent components are still sound. Call (626) 714-2992 with a photo of the damage and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a replacement.
A countertop-only swap in a Boxabl kitchen is usually a one-day job after templating; a full kitchen remodel with cabinet replacement, countertop, sink, and backsplash typically takes two to three weeks of on-site work in Pasadena. We stage material deliveries so you aren’t living with a half-empty kitchen any longer than necessary, and we work around nap and school hours where we can.
We keep common Boxabl-sized cabinet boxes, hinges, slides, sink templates, and countertop samples on hand, and we order KraftMaid, Wellborn, Cambria, and Silestone material to factory-cut tolerance for your specific unit. Standard off-the-shelf big-box cabinets will not fit a Boxabl wall cavity, so we plan around that before we ever put a drop cloth down. Call (626) 714-2992 and we’ll check your serial number against our spec sheets while you’re on the phone.
