Toto Home Additions & ADU: The Pasadena Owner’s Guide
If you’re planning a home addition or accessory dwelling unit in Pasadena and you want Toto fixtures and fittings through the new space, we can help. Elmstead Remodeling Pasadena installs Toto products as part of full home additions and ADU construction, with installed project costs typically ranging from $45,000 to $130,000 for an addition and $90,000 to $220,000 for a ground-up ADU in this market. Most Pasadena owners reach out to us after realizing Toto’s rough-in dimensions, supply sizes, or drainage specifications don’t match the fixtures their previous contractor defaulted to – and they want the plumbing done right before drywall goes up.
We’re an independent Pasadena remodeling contractor, not a Toto dealer or factory service provider, but we work with Toto’s full catalog: wall-hung bowls, Washlet rough-ins, high-efficiency tanks, and the newer skirted trapway designs that need specific carrier systems. The written price for any Toto-inclusive addition or ADU is given before the first drop cloth goes down, and Graham Stein puts his name on that document.
Which Toto Models This Applies To

The compatibility question matters more with Toto than with most fixture brands, because Toto changed carrier and rough-in standards across its product generations. If your project specifies a wall-hung Toto or a Washlet+, the in-wall carrier and electrical rough-in have to be planned and installed before tile work starts. Retrofitting a Washlet rough-in after the fact usually means opening a wall and running a dedicated GFCI circuit, which costs more than doing it in the framing phase. For floor-mounted Toto models – the Drake, Ultramax, Entrada, and Eco lines – the critical number is the 12-inch rough-in, though some Toto skirts require 10-inch or 14-inch configurations, and the finish depth changes with each series.
OEM Toto carriers, flush valves, and fill assemblies are the safer bet for anything behind a finished wall. For exposed supply lines and shutoffs, we sometimes recommend aftermarket equivalents from Kohler or Grohe when their valve bodies match Toto’s inlet spacing, but we show you both options and explain the warranty difference before you choose. Pasadena’s hard water accelerates scale buildup in Toto’s 1.28 GPF flush valve jets, so we spec the newer jet-rinse designs on any ADU where the water line runs through older galvanized supply pipe.

Signs Your Toto Home Addition or ADU Installation Wasn’t Spec’d Correctly
- Washlet seat won’t activate after the wall is closed up. The electrical rough-in was missed or placed on a shared circuit. Toto Washlets want a dedicated GFCI outlet at the right height, and Pasadena code inspectors check this on ADU finals.
- Wall-hung bowl flexes or shifts when you sit. The in-wall carrier wasn’t rated for Toto’s specific bowl weight and mounting pattern. Carrier choice has to happen at framing, not at finish.
- Low, weak flush in a second-story addition. Pipe sizing or venting was undersized for Toto’s high-efficiency 1.28 GPF flush. Adding a booster or correcting the vent run requires opening the wall again.
- Condensation pooling at the tank or supply line. Pasadena’s summer humidity plus Toto’s efficient tank fill cycle can produce sweat on uninsulated supply lines, especially in unconditioned ADU walls.
- Skirted bowl leaves a visible gap at the floor or wall. The finished floor or wall plane shifted after rough-in, or the waste flange height wasn’t set for Toto’s skirt dimensions. Caulk won’t fix a 3/8-inch misalignment.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Toto-inclusive addition in Pasadena, plan on $45,000 to $130,000 depending on square footage, foundation work, and how much plumbing has to be rough-in from scratch. A detached ADU with a full Toto bathroom typically falls between $90,000 and $220,000 once site prep, slab, framing, and fixtures are complete. What drives the spread: whether we’re tying into an existing sewer line or running a new lateral, whether the Toto rough-in goes into new framing or existing walls, and how much cabinetry and tile work surrounds the fixtures.
Every line item is spelled out before work starts – fixture allowance, carrier, supply lines, waste line, electrical rough-in, finish trim – and the price on paper is the price you pay at the end, no footnotes. Workmanship on our installation is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t done right after the job is complete, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
For a Toto fixture already installed and working, there are simple checks a Pasadena owner can do: confirm the shutoff operates, listen for the fill valve cycling, and check that the supply line isn’t kinked behind the tank. What you should not attempt on your own is any wall-hung carrier adjustment, in-wall supply work, or Washlet electrical rough-in. Opening a wall to move a carrier means cutting studs, re-framing, and meeting Pasadena’s plumbing and electrical inspection requirements – and doing it wrong can mean water damage inside a finished wall that takes months to show up.
If the fixture was roughed in wrong, call us at (626) 714-2992. We’ll walk the rough-in with you, find the mismatch, and give you a written price for the correction before we touch anything.
FAQs

Toto bowls and tanks themselves routinely last 20 to 30 years with Pasadena water conditions; it’s the fill valves, flush valve seals, and Washlet electrical components that wear first, usually in the 5 to 10 year range. We can quote replacements for any of these as part of a larger remodeling scope. Call (626) 714-2992 for an exact quote on your Toto model.
Sometimes, yes – if the carrier is sound and the issue is supply placement or valve depth, we can often make corrections through an access panel rather than opening the whole wall. The honest answer depends on what’s behind the tile, and we’ll tell you which path is cheaper before you spend a dollar. Call (626) 714-2992 for a wall-behind-the-wall assessment.
A supply valve swap or fill assembly replacement is usually done in under two hours. Re-setting a wall-hung bowl or correcting a carrier usually takes one to two days including drywall patch and paint. A full rough-in correction with inspection takes three to five working days. Call (626) 714-2992 for a schedule estimate on your specific fix.
Our crews carry the most common Toto fill valves, flush valve seals, supply lines, and seat hardware, but carriers, tanks, and specialty Washlet components are ordered by model number and usually arrive within a few days. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the surrounding cabinetry and surfaces, so the fixture fix and the finish work can happen in one visit. Call (626) 714-2992 to check availability for your model.
